Winter ushered in a new year, and with it, yet another busy quarter for our undergraduates. Here’s what the brothers of the Alpha Zeta chapter of the Theta Xi fraternity have been up to these past few months:

9 New Brothers

Our brotherhood continues to thrive by recruiting quality new members.  This winter we followed up on our amazing fall class with 9 outstanding new brothers, each of whom brings something unique to our ever-growing fraternity. A huge congratulations to Chris Hamad, Alex Herbert, Sam Harris, Luke Bonnema, Carl Geagea, Sean Kennedy, Jon Mesna, Cristian Lopez, and Daryl Leong on their initiation. Brother Sam Harris is the second legacy of the Alpha Zeta chapter who we’ve recruited this school year; his father was Richard Harris, AZ 791.

Cleaning Up Santa Monica

Our brothers visited Santa Monica Beach along with 80 sisters of Chi Omega in an effort to clean the areas under and around the world-famous pier. This is our second community service project of the school year on which we’ve collaborated with Heal the Bay, a non-profit environmental group working to restore the Santa Monica area. We picked up over 100 bags of trash in the course of just three hours!

Greek Week

This year’s Greek Week was based on the popular Hunger Games series. UCLA fraternities and sororities were divided into ten “districts”; we were assigned to District 3 along with Chi Omega, Triangle, Phi Sigma Rho, Lambda Phi Epsilon, and Chi Alpha Delta. After months of planning and dozens of zany Greek Games including flag football, trivia, volleyball, relay races, and more, our district won third place overall in Greek Week. Special thanks are in order to all of our teammates for helping us achieve this honor!

IM Football Champions!

Theta Xi participated in the Fraternity B League of intramural football once again this quarter. After a season of highs and lows, we ultimately took home the trophy after defeating Zeta Beta Tau in the championship game! The brotherhood showed up in full force to cheer our players on to victory. Some even tried to bring a grill to tailgate the event, only to find out that open flames are not actually allowed on the intramural field… Nevertheless, congratulations to our IM football team on their momentous victory.

A Return to the Top

Fall quarter was a rough one for our chapter, at least from an academic perspective. Over the past few years, we’ve traditionally held one of the highest quarterly GPAs on the row; needless to say, we were shocked to find that we’d placed 12th out of UCLA’s 20 social fraternities during the fall. Due to a massive collaborative effort put in by our brotherhood, we are proud to announce that we’re once again 4th on the row with a GPA of 3.32. Great job, guys!

That’s it for this edition of our chapter newsletter. See you in the spring!
