Spring quarter rounded out yet another excellent year for our brotherhood! Here’s what Theta Xi’s Alpha Zeta chapter has been up to these past few months:
3 New Brothers
This year we were fortunate enough to have not one, not two, but three Associate Member classes! During spring quarter we added three outstanding new brothers to our fraternity; congratulations to Josh Helali, Tyler Horswell, and Isauro Meza on their initiation. (Brother Horswell will also be living in the house for the ’14-’15 academic year!) This brings the total count of initiated brothers for the year to 26 and makes our highest pin number AZ 1678.
6294 – Celebrating 150 Years of Theta Xi!
In celebration of the 150th anniversary of our beloved fraternity, this year’s 6294 festivities were bigger and better than ever before, the earliest of which included a Dodgers game and the first annual alumni golf tournament! The Friday before April 29—the date on which our Alpha chapter was founded at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute way back in 1864—our chapter held a barbeque for its undergraduate members and alumni at 629 Gayley. It featured catering from the local, alumni-owned Koala Tapioca as well as live music from our house band, Drift. The two Los Angeles chapters (Alpha Zeta – UCLA, and Alpha Nu – USC) put brotherhood before rivalry as they celebrated the 150th anniversary with a formal event at The Proud Bird restaurant near LAX. Lastly, Alpha Zeta and other local brothers participated in the nationally-telecast “Coast to Coast Toast” at the Alpha Nu chapter house. Here’s to 150 more years of continued success!
Theta Xi Ultimate
Our chapter held its first annual philanthropy this spring: an ultimate frisbee tournament at UCLA’s own Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Congratulations to the ladies of Alpha Delta Pi for winning the tournament, and our sincerest thanks to everyone who supported our month-long fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. With the help of the sororities that participated in our tournament, as well as an incredibly generous donation from our alumni, we were able to raise over $7,500 to research, treat, and ultimately cure MS. Shout-outs are also in order to Brothers Herbert, Soucie, and Travaglini for being our top three fundraisers!
Long Live the Queen
Last but certainly not least, it wouldn’t be spring quarter without the crowning of a new Blue Iris Queen! The Alpha Zeta chapter continued its annual tradition of electing a house sweetheart and honoring her on our yearly composite. For her continued involvement in our chapter and in celebration of her recent pinning, Kappa Delta’s Tori Brkich was chosen (in a very close race, no less!) as this year’s Blue Iris Queen.
That’s it for our spring newsletter. We’ll see you again next year!
