It’s been a busy year here at the Alpha Zeta chapter of Theta Xi, and we finished an overall strong year with our strongest quarter yet. Our brothers have done great things for our chapter, college, and community these past few months so here’s a breakdown of all that we’ve been up to:

6 New Brothers

Spring Rush was low-key as usual this year, but that didn’t stop us from finding some incredible new additions to our brotherhood. Our recently-revamped associate member education program continued to flourish under the guidance of brother Mitchell Barnes-Wallace, so much so that for the first time in years 100% of those who accepted their bids were successfully initiated into the bonds of Theta Xi. Congratulations to Omar Chavez, Arnaldo Salazar, Matt Gillum, Ben Schwartz, Taylor Nava, and George Abusaba on their initiation! This not only brings our total count of brothers in the Alpha Zeta chapter to 1,652 but also means the 2012-2013 academic year was an incredible one for recruitment, with 45 new brothers initiated!

Delta Gamma held their annual philanthropy, Anchor Splash, at UCLA’s Sunset Rec the day after initiation. Expectations were high since the men of Theta Xi won first place for their performance last year, and much of the brotherhood was in attendance anticipating a repeat victory. Unfortunately, we did not come in first place; however, all was not lost! Brother Zain Malik, who was crowned Alpha Delta Pi’s Lion King earlier this year, won yet another sorority sweetheart competition and became Delta Gamma’s newest Anchorman. Congratulations, Zain!

This year’s annual 6294 alumni dinner was held at Tokyo Delve’s Sushi Bar in North Hollywood, featuring a wide variety of Japanese dishes and even a show put on by the restaurant’s staff. All of the brotherhood was in attendance, and some brought dates to celebrate the founding of our fraternity at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute on April 29, 1864. Several alumni also came to catch up with one another and celebrate the recent success of the Alpha Zeta chapter. We couldn’t be more excited for next year’s 6294 when we’ll be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Theta Xi, but until then a huge “thank you” is owed to Alumni Board President Joe Cottrell for organizing the event.

All True Men Accreditation

The Alpha Zeta chapter of Theta Xi was one of just 23 in the entire country to earn All True Men Accreditation for their work during the 2012-2013 academic year. This makes us one of our fraternity’s most exemplary chapters, excelling in at least seven of the nine standards of operation (ritual, membership, scholarship, finances, membership education, chapter operations, campus and community service, alumni relations, and housing) denoted by the Grand Lodge. Since we currently hold this distinguished status, our chapter will be provided with additional funding, resources, and mentorship for the upcoming year—one more reason for prospective Greeks to rush Theta Xi in the fall!

All in all, spring quarter was one of the best that the Alpha Zeta chapter has seen in quite some time. But in addition to everything above, there are some other things we’re really excited about for the upcoming year. Our house will be at capacity with 46 brothers living in, including our newly-appointed Live-In Advisors: Vincent Ho, David Mangold, and Sukhpinder Cheema. Not only that, but returning President Mike McBirnie and new Co-Brotherhood Chairs Kyle Travaglini and Drew Soucie have all expressed an emphasis on bonding and values in the immediate future. And as if all that wasn’t enough, our chapter’s average GPA has increased since winter quarter making Theta Xi one of the top 10 social fraternities at UCLA in academics. That’s it for this edition of our quarterly newsletter; stay tuned in the fall to see how everything turns out!
